This New Horror Film Can Be Streamed, and It Has the Power to Test Your Partnership.

Consider this a test for long-term couples who appreciate the horror genre: Sit down with your partner and stream Together. The independent film success of 2025 just made its streaming debut via Hulu. On the surface, it could look like typical physical horror, but inside Together lies a profound examination about the ways we decide to love one another.

An Introductory Film Delving into Partnership Complexities

Together marks the debut feature-length film for filmmaker Michael Shanks. It showcases the real-life married couple Dave Franco and Alison Brie as a couple named Tim and Millie, a pair who are not married that have been together for ten years. Having wed in real life in 2017, the actors contribute a unique chemistry to their roles, masterfully depicting both the joys and frustrations of a long-term relationship.

The story begins when Millie and Tim relocate from the big city to the countryside for her career. A familiar story element, sure, but that’s primarily where the cliches conclude. Together evolves into as much a examination of mental states of the couple's dynamic as it is a movie featuring biological frights.

A Paranormal Spark

While trekking near their new home, a violent storm occurs, and Millie and Tim discover an subterranean cavern. After a night spent there and managing to escape, a strange force begins influencing the duo. This force creates a supernatural closeness between them that goes well past typical partnership.

The whole movie is a gradually intensifying of scares, blending bits of fever-dream horrors, unsettling (but not excessively graphic) body horror, and surprisingly comedic dialogue (sometimes amidst something disturbing). The director weaves these elements together expertly and presents them in a gradually swelling aura of dread.

Nuanced Portrayals

A large part of Together is only Brie and Franco, and they skillfully illustrate numerous complexities to the partnership at the film's core. Her self-assurance and sense of connection is suffering due to a distance. Her unspoken irritation of Tim for his reluctance to focus on anything other than his floundering music career gradually emerges.

In contrast, Tim's character experiences isolation and cut off by Millie, who’s the cause they’ve relocated rural and removed from his support system. He is terrified of the concept of utterly sacrificing his sense of self in another person. This fear is amplified by the fact he can’t drive and needs Millie for transportation.

The director's cleverest decision in this movie avoids making Tim or Millie the definite antagonist.

Both characters face the sort of issues that are inherent in long-term unions over a long period. At their core, they have affection for one another. They find humor with each other, offer support, and open up at times. But beneath it all, there’s an unavoidable current of uncertainty about their bond.

Thematic Depth

While the paranormal elements in Together represent these concerns of codependency and totally devoting oneself to a partner, the symbolism never feels clumsy or heavy-handed. Instead, these more disturbing, unsettling scenes present a perfect parallel to the interpersonal storytelling. Both the frights and the fights serve the other in harmony.

A Debated Finale

Together’s final act, which remains unspoiled, has left audiences divided on the film’s ultimate message about unhealthy partnerships. Reports indicate that single viewers have understood the narrative as a compelling reason for avoiding commitment. Conversely, some couples who were in conflict found that the film actually helped them reconcile.

If you are alone or with a partner, your own response could function as a telling indicator of how you think about commitment. Will the finale plant feelings of uneasiness and dread, or a heartwarming sense of hope? Will you see yourself in Tim or Millie and yell at the screen, or simply look at your partner and say, “I understand that choice”?

No matter your reaction, Together is an experiment you can embark on at this very moment.

Together is streaming on Hulu's platform at present.
