A defence official has revealed that the Ministry of Defence is actively looking into the potential threats posed by Chinese-made vehicles, while personnel have been instructed to refrain from talking about secret matters in any vehicles.
Security Advice for Defence Staff
In a recent interview on a radio station, a defence minister addressed claims that Ministry of Defence staff have been instructed not to talk about classified material while travelling in Chinese cars.
He explained that the ministry is “examining” Chinese vehicles within its fleets, however stressed that security is a issue in all modern cars.
Our department has a collection of thousands of vehicles in the MoD and those vehicles account for a very small number.
But regardless of if you’re traveling in a Chinese car or a non-Chinese car, our instruction to our staff is not to plug Ministry of Defence devices into their car, to avoid having conversations at a classified level in any kind of vehicle, due to the increasing threats of eavesdropping that are present in every single automobile, to restrict those confidential talks in protected areas. That’s a wise and sensible thing for anyone worried about security.
After it was put to him that it would be wise for the MoD to stop using all cars from China, Pollard replied: ‘That’s exactly what we are looking into at the moment.”
Wider Security Background
The announcement comes as reports from Scandinavian countries have alerted the United Kingdom to the presence of multi-purpose kill switches in Chinese buses, which could enable China to disable public transport and cause chaos to transport systems.
Additionally, a Russian spy ship has been directing laser beams at RAF pilots, described as a “extremely risky” action by government representatives.
This broader defence environment underscores the importance of strong measures and caution in all areas of official activities, from vehicle usage to discussions habits.
