A tragic railway accident in the southern state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident sure to fuel opposition criticisms regarding the rapidity and management of the country's major government projects.
The accident took place on the Interoceanic Train, a rail link developed to join the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was created to provide an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring commercial progress in the area.
“We are going to thoroughly investigate what caused this tragedy,” declared the country's president.
The official announced that, of the approximately 250 people on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in serious condition. The official added plans to visit Oaxaca to confer with those affected.
Flagship Project of Past Leadership
The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone public works project of the previous administration, whose time in office ended the previous year. This venture was intimately linked to his government's economic goals for the southern region.
Another multi-billion dollar rail project from that era, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the comprehensive effort to stimulate the economic fortunes of a historically poorer part of the country.
Project Execution and Safety Concerns
The construction of both rail lines was supervised by the nation's military, marking a significant growth of its role in national infrastructure. They were built at an accelerated speed, defying predictions to be at least partly opened before the end of that presidency.
However, this rushed timetable had concurrently raised significant concerns over construction quality.
- Sunday's derailment was the third event on the Interoceanic Train this year.
- This encompasses an earlier collision this month when a train struck a truck at a level crossing.
- The other major rail project has also seen several non-deadly derailments.
Appeals for Review and Suspension
In the wake of the catastrophe, the chief of a primary political opposition urged an immediate halt in the construction and operation of all such projects.
This halt was proposed pending a thorough technical review. The party declared that the tragedy "requires immediate answers."
In reply, the president maintained that the train had been functioning in total adherence to all safety requirements. Commitments were given that the government would remain "accountable" in both the development and management of these vital projects.
