A group of seven alleged individuals of German left-wing extremist group face trial over multiple attacks

Seven individuals allegedly belonging to the left-wing extremist organization Antifa Ost went on trial on Tuesday, facing charges for violent actions against far-right activists that earned them the nickname “the hammer group”.

Global terrorist designation and legal charges

Recently, the United States classified the organization as a terrorist organization along with several other European far-left and anarchist networks.

Authorities in Germany state the group was responsible for targeting sites in Germany and Hungary from 2018 through 2023. Among the incidents is the repeated targeting of a business proprietor in central Thuringia, whose venue was known as a gathering spot for rightwing activists.

Some suspects are said to have employing hammers against presumed rightwing extremists, causing several with serious injuries.

Trial details and international connections

The trial involving six men and one woman is scheduled to continue until mid-2026 in the city of Dresden, Germany. Two defendants, identified as Johann G. and Paul M, are additionally accused for violent incidents in the Hungarian capital during February 2023, coinciding with an yearly gathering called the “day of honour” that attracts far-right participants from across Europe.

In a related case, a different German individual, Maja T., is facing trial in the Hungarian judicial system for multiple charges of attempted assault against far-right activists prior to the same rally in 2023.

Regional context and organizational structure

Eastern Germany has historically served as a breeding ground for both right-wing extremist and anti-immigration youth groups, as well as the frequently radical antifascist groups that counter them.

Prosecutors describe Johann G as a senior figure within Antifa Ost, tasked with organizing violent acts and recruiting accomplices.

Alongside Paul M., he is alleged to have arranged training sessions where radical left activists practised combat techniques and rehearsed attacks. In storage facilities overseen by the suspect, the network allegedly accumulated tools, pepper spray, concealment items and mobile phones.

Prior legal cases and global responses

A different activist previously active with the group, Lina E, became a symbolic figure within some far-left activist circles following her conviction in 2023 for attacks on suspected right-wing individuals.

The US designation makes group members barred from entering the US, freezes any assets they could possess within the world’s largest economy and criminalizes offering assistance to them.

The German right-wing Alternative for Germany welcomed the American move and urged the government in Berlin to take similar action. In contrast, the country's diplomatic office simply stated it had “taken note” of the US designation.

“The danger from the organization has recently decreased significantly. Key leaders and most aggressive participants have already been convicted or remain detained.”
